What is an MBBR System?

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) is an advanced biological wastewater treatment process that uses suspended biofilm carriers (bio media) as a surface for microorganisms to grow and thrive.

During operation, microorganisms form a biofilm on the surface of the carriers, which remain continuously suspended and in motion by aeration. This ensures full contact between the biofilm and the wastewater, significantly improving the removal efficiency of organic pollutants and ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N).

Compared with the conventional activated sludge process, the MBBR system offers higher biomass concentration, greater resistance to hydraulic and organic shock loads, and a smaller installation footprint. These advantages contribute to stable treatment performance, lower maintenance requirements, and improved operational reliability.

MBBR technology is suitable for both newly constructed wastewater treatment plants and the expansion or upgrading of existing treatment facilities, providing a flexible and cost-effective solution for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.

How Does an MBBR System Work?

In treatment process, large bacteria and bacteria membrane update, adopt bio-logicalcarrier, improve the contact efficiency of micro- organism and pollutantmatter insewage; the whole treatment equipment produce anaerobic-anoxia-oxidation threekind of environment take turns function, improve purified waterability of differentkind of microbial population, intensify organism removal andnitrogen and phospho.rus removal function.

The Linzhen MBBR system combines advanced biological treatment with intelligent process control to ensure stable wastewater purification under varying operating conditions.

1. Pretreatment

Wastewater first passes through screening and grit removal equipment to eliminate large debris and protect downstream equipment.

2. Equalization Tank

The equalization tank balances wastewater flow and pollutant concentration, reducing hydraulic fluctuations and ensuring stable biological treatment.

3. Biological MBBR Reactor

Inside the reactor, suspended biofilm carriers continuously circulate through aeration. Microorganisms attached to the carrier surfaces metabolize organic pollutants while simultaneously carrying out nitrification and denitrification processes.

The moving bio media provides:

  • Large specific surface area
  • High biomass concentration
  • Efficient oxygen transfer
  • Stable microbial growth

This significantly improves pollutant removal efficiency.

4. Secondary Clarification

The treated water flows into a clarifier where suspended solids are separated from the purified water. Part of the sludge is recycled, while excess sludge is removed for further dewatering.

5. Disinfection

Depending on project requirements, UV disinfection or chemical dosing ensures the treated water complies with local discharge standards or water reuse regulations.

Working Principle

The working principle of the integrated sewage treatment equipment mainly relies on the biological treatment method, which removes organic matter andother pollutantsin sewage through the metabolism of microorganisms. Thespecific process includespretreatment, biological treatment, anoxic and aerobic treatment, solid-liquid separa-tion, disinfection and discharge and other stages.
